The title of this collage is Waiting For Our Chance. I did this about a month ago. I do not often do political art but this issue is near and dear to my partner and I. Minnesota made history today- The gay marriage bill passed the state senate- the house had passed it Thursday- our governor will sign it into law tomorrow making Minnesota the 12th state to legalize same sex marriage. It has been an emotional day to say the least. I had friends and former students call me with joy. My partner and I will celebrate 37 years together in June- lots to celebrate. I look forward to the day when this is legal in the whole country. A big thank you to all who helped make this happen.

ReplyDeleteI thought of you when all of this was in the news. Who knew last fall when we defeated the attempt to enshrine the ban on gay marriage into the state constitution that we would get the law changed so soon after? I thought it was quite interesting that the Star Tribune editorial page writer Lori Sturdevant suggested that it was the attempt to pass that constitutional amendment that made the current law change possible, because it spurred the formation of United for All Families, which has turned out to be a very effective change agent. Poetic justice indeed!

Jamie and I were cheering from the sidelines here in Washington State, when we heard the news! We were thrilled when it became legal, here, and just as thrilled for you, Ron, and so many others when it happened in Minnesota. We attend the wedding of two friends, who have been partners for 21 years, in late June. As far as the 39 remaining states John mentions in his comment go: the 'tipping point' is coming!
